5 Signs Your Car Key or Ignition Is About to Fail (Before You Get Stranded)

Cars rarely leave you stranded without dropping a few hints first. The problem is that those hints are easy to brush off. Maybe the key sticks once, then works perfectly the next day. Perhaps, you have to turn it twice before the engine starts. Since the car eventually starts, you’d assume everything is fine.

Until one morning it isn't.

A worn key or failing ignition doesn't usually stop working overnight. It gets worse little by little. Catching the problem early can save you from an inconvenient breakdown, an expensive repair, and the frustration of being stuck in a parking lot wondering what went wrong!

Following are some symptoms that you need to take into account!

1. Turning the Key Isn't Easy

The process of starting up your car should not be a hard one. If you have noticed difficulty in turning the key, taking it out, putting it back in, and trying to start your car all over again, don’t ignore this symptom.

While many people think that the key is "just being obstinate," there is often more going on than meets the eye. One difficult start isn't necessarily a cause for concern. When it becomes part of your daily routine, it's time to have it checked.

2. The Key No Longer Turns Easily.

The process of starting your vehicle should not be difficult at all. If you find yourself fidgeting with the key, removing or inserting the key once more, do not disregard this problem.

While many people think that the key is "just being obstinate," there is often more going on than meets the eye.

3. The Ignition Feels Different

You know how your car normally feels. That's why small changes matter. Do you think the key suddenly feels tighter? Maybe it turns farther than normal before the engine starts. Or perhaps it occasionally refuses to turn until you move the steering wheel.

Those little differences often indicate that internal parts are beginning to wear. Ignoring them rarely makes the problem disappear.

4. Your Spare Key Works Better

Here's an easy test. If your primary key has become difficult to use, try the spare. If the spare turns smoothly while your everyday key continues to stick, you've probably found the answer.

Many people automatically assume the ignition is failing when the real problem is simply a worn key. Replacing the key early is usually much easier than waiting until it damages the ignition itself.

5. You're Starting to Avoid Using That Vehicle

This may sound strange, but it happens more often than people admit. You know the car will eventually start. It just takes a little patience. So you begin choosing the other family vehicle whenever possible because it's less frustrating.

When you start planning around an unreliable ignition, it's a sign that something needs attention. Vehicles should start consistently. If you're changing your routine because yours doesn't, that's your cue to have it inspected. Your ignition isn't supposed to be a wrestling match.

A Little Attention Today Can Save a Lot of Stress Tomorrow

At GreenPro Locksmith, we've helped plenty of customers who told us the same thing after their key finally stopped working.

"It had been acting up for weeks." The warning signs were there all along.

Visiting a trusted locksmith shop for an inspection is far easier than arranging emergency service in a parking lot when your car refuses to start. Sometimes the best repair isn't fixing a complete failure. It's recognizing the small warning signs early enough that the failure never happens in the first place.
