How to Install a Door Lock

The installation of a door should be handled by a professional locksmith, though you can handle it if you are comfortable with power tools. You can trust GreenPro Locksmith technicians for the utmost professionalism in installation, repair, and addition of extra security to your door. The following steps are necessary to install a deadbolt to your door;

Gather All Necessary Tools

You need a new deadbolt lock, Philips screwdrivers, ruler or tape measure, masking tape, a pencil, and a drill with a driver. Other tools you will need include; safety glasses, hammer, dust mask, chisel, and a lock set template jig.

The next step is to choose where the lock will be placed. Professional locksmith suggests that the lock should be placed some 6-12 inches above the door handle. Mark the positioning points with a pencil.

Prepare the Door for the Installation of Deadbolt Lock

Choose the backseat of the on the template jig and gently match the placement of the existing lock on the door to ensure that they align vertically. Make sure the template is aligned to center it with the line you drew with a pencil, earlier.  Apply the 2 ½ inch hole saw to bore the hole for the body of the lock.  Once the hole is bored, simply cut out the door edge for the latch plate. You can use the latch plate that comes with the door or use a chisel, to chisel out an existing latch plate.

This step can be quite difficult for individuals, and that is why you need a certified locksmith from GreenPro Locksmith to install a door lock

Prepare the Door Frame for the Installation of the Door

Drill two holes from the mark created earlier, one above and the other below. This hole will look like figure 8 and the mark should be at the center. Chisel out the holes to flatten and straighten the sides.

Put the latch-up against the hole with the center on the mark, then trace it with the strike template. Once the strike area has been chiseled, put the strike in before drilling 1/8-inch pilot holes. Install the strike to your door with two screws. with the completion of this step, you are ready to install the new lock.

Install Your Door Lock

The first thing to do is to apply the use of the chisel to square the corner latch that is going inside the rounded corner hole. Round-up the corner into the previous square corner and drive in the latch into the rounded corner hole. In most cases, the new latch plate may be bigger than the old one. Install your drive latch and make sure it snugs properly before installing the deadbolt.
